Sept. 3 2008: Melor is on its way.

May 29, 2008: An update regarding the use of my fonts: link.

An experimental hairline serif type. Influenced (or inspired) by the 1950s advertising typography to a certain degree. I didn’t spend much time on this and it was eventually unfinished because I soon found out that similar designs already exist, and that made me rather woebegone actually.

Incognita

An experiment of using traditional geometric shapes to construct letters (shapes). The letters were initially drawn on a sketchbook, and when I finally got the time to digitalize them, I finished this font in one day. It was kind of silly, to be honest.

Chanor Sans

2008, regular weight released for free.

This is actually my first experiment with OpenType fonts. At the beginning it was increasingly frustrating as I plodded through all those OpenType tags and tried to figure out everything, fortunately the programming part wasn’t that hard for me since I already had programming experience. This font is also an attempt at blending sans and serif, but the proportions are all messed up.

ULTSans

2007, no longer available.

I was really naive when I attempted to draw letters in Adobe Illustrator and paste them into FontLab. I didn’t know how to deal with vectors yet, due to too much playing around with Photoshop. The curves are awful and the amount of mistakes I had made resulted in the abortion of this typeface.

Melor

Began earlier in 2008, still under development. Available for preview.

About miphol studio

Miphol studio is a one-person experimental independent studio, specified in typography and photography, and it is owned by me—Marica.

About the designer

I currently study and live in Miami, FL, United States. I also have a home in Shenzhen and in HongKong, which I visits (and misses) occasionally. My works mainly focus on type design, abstract and experimental photography, and computer-human interaction—user interface design. Further works include industrial design and 3D concept art (not those random explosive shapes though). I also do web design and some coding, and I am very concerned about the development of internet.
I believe that the responsibility of designer is to act as a medium through which ideas transform into real objects, and a successful transformation requires efforts from both the designer and the client, but unfortunately one of them is perpetually unavailable.

About the name miphol

For many reasons, I decided to change the name and domain of my studio, which was once named Marica Typographic Design Studio. After making the decision I went on a crazy hunt for a new name, and finally came up with this (domain) name that almost no one has ever thought of.
