The Village Pet Store and Charcoal Grill

|

The Official Website

Banksy, a street artist from Bristol, opened a fake pet shop in NYC. This installation is titled "The Village Pet Store and Charcoal Grill", featuring chicken nuggets with legs (my favourite), moving hot dogs, a rabbit with pearl necklace, leopard and etc.

According to Independent, Banksys offered a written explanation for the installation: "New Yorkers don't care about art, they care about pets. So I'm exhibiting them instead."

Middle Duet

|

Ratmansky's "Middle Duet," made for the Bolshoi Ballet in 1998. Ambiguous beauty.

I have been reading the old issues of L'Officiel de la Mode, starting way back from 1921. I have once posted here some screenshots but now I have found more.
When looking at those advertisements, it occurs to me that they are not "old" in style; the typefaces used are certainly outdated but the essential rules of typography are still there. Look at how the designers carefully mixed the few typefaces together, creating something new in each ad. They did not have as many choices of fonts as we do nowadays, but they still managed to achieve the same effect. Of course, the lack of color is rather incomparable.

Jeremy Laing

Jeremy Laing is a Canadian fashion designer who apprenticed with Alexander McQueen. His Fall/Winter collection this year brought some fresh looks to my eyes. I like how he constructed the clothing with just enough amount of details, he used pattern sparingly, and he paid much attention to the back as well as the front.

L'officiel de la mode

|

It is surprises me when I looked at these "old" magazines, finding them so inspiring. Some of them don't even look "old". The above advertisements are from 1930, 1942 and 1957. For full view of L'officiel magazine from 1920 to 2000, click here.

Cri De Coeur

|
Cri de Coeur is a French expression that translates literally to "cry from the heart."   To us, it symbolizes our heartfelt desire to change the face of the fashion footwear market.  Launching for Spring 2008, Cri de Coeur provides stylish, contemporary women's footwear that is ethically produced from start to finish.
Gina Ferraraccio is the founder and creative inspiration behind the brand. As a vegan, she felt frustrated with trying to satisfy both the stylish and animal-friendly qualities when shopping, especially for goods usually made of leather.  She discovered there were not any options readily available to her that were high-quality, high-fashion, vegan footwear and began to formulate the first ideas for Cri de Coeur in the late 1990's. As environmental issues became more and more prevalent in everyday awareness, she realized to merely make vegan shoes while ignoring their impact on the planet would be irresponsible.  Thus, the complete vision for Cri de Coeur was born.

The shoes look really comfortable, though I do not think they are as chic as some people think they are, they are very good alternatives from the more popular designer shoes. Plus, they are "green". And oh yes, the shoes above also appeared in the Elle magazine this month.
Cri de Coeur shoes are available for online purchase here.

Truth & Beauty

|
There is a very inspiring poem by architect Moshe Safdie on TED.

He who seeks truth shall find beauty
He who seeks beauty shall find vanity

He who seeks order shall find gratification
He who seeks gratification shall be disappointed

He who considers himself a servant of his fellow beings shall find the joy of self expression
He who seeks self expression shall fall into the pit of arrogance

Arrogance is incompatible with nature
Through nature the nature of the universe and the nature of man we shall seek truth
If we seek truth we shall find beauty

-- Moshe Safdie
